Hike Mt. Lowe Railway via Sam Merrill Trail.
The Mount Lowe Railway is located in the San Gabriel Mountains. This hike will take you to three historical sites: Echo Mountain, Ye Alpine Tavern, and Inspiration Point. Echo Mountain at elevation 3,207 feet is the place where the world famous Echo Mountain House once stood. Ye Alpine Tavern at elevation 4,400 feet is now Mt. Lowe Trail Camp. Inspiration Point at elevation 4,530 feet is the highest point of this trail route, where sighting tubes are still in place for visitors to take a hands-on geographical lesson. To reach these historical sites, you will be trekking along the Mt. Lowe rail bed. Along the trail and on the sites, there are interpretive signs to help you picture the scenes and events occurred back in 1893-1936.
